San Diego State Offense vs. Navy (Part 4)

The San Diego State Offense versus Navy. The remaining half provided nothing really revolutionary and since I only have so much file space as of right now I'm going to limit the amount of pictures I use. I have put together a chart summarizing the play calls.

Of the 64 offensive snaps, those were broken down into run, pass, play-action pass, or screen. Which breaks down to:

Runs - 41

The runs were divided between:

Inside Zone - 16 (1 being a zone read)
Power - 12
Toss - 3
Outside Zone - 2
Draw - 2

Miscellaneous scrambles make up the rest.

Pass - 14

Play Action Pass - 7

Under Center vs. Shotgun

Formations:

34 different formations used.

I think the rushing statistics may be skewed towards more rushing because of the built up lead, but the staggering amount of different formations is impressive. What makes it even more impressive is the true simplicity of the rushing attack, which was essentially split between inside zone and power, with some toss, draw, and outside zone thrown in.

The pass game is a little more complicated, using multiple concepts whether it was off of a drop back look or a play-action look.

What astounded me and was slightly troubling was the lack of a counter in the base offense. No kind of counter run play at all besides running a reverse and faking it two other times. I would hope if Hoke plans on bringing man blocking schemes and utilizing the power play so much that he would also plan on using a counter play, similar to the one Auburn uses.

This takes us up to halftime, plays 21-29.

Play 21 - Play Action-Drag

Formation: Motion to twins left










Play 22 - Check Down Swing

Formation: Motion to 2X1 right - Gun

The swing is the final checkdown, I've drawn the rest of the routes though.










Play 23 - WR Screen

Formation: Twins Right Over - TB Motion to flanker left










Play 24 - Toss

Formation: Doube Tight Double Wing

Both playside tackle and guard pull to lead on the play.








Play 25 - Dig

Formation: Trey Right to 2X2 with a TE.

This is the NCAA concept with a shallow drag underneath and a dig over top, I can't tell if there is a post on top of this or not.








Play 26 - Inside Zone

Formation: Pro Right I








Play 27 - Comeback

Formation - No Tight End I to 2x2

Here are plays 11-20. Borges definitely shows the ability to do many things, and with Denard staying I expect him to find ways to make it work.

Play 11 - Power

Notice how the backfield action with the tail back, full back and pulling guard all appear to look like the power play?

This is a split end over look for the offense.








Play 16 - Fake FB Dive - Toss

Formation: Twins Left I

Formation: Bunch Right to Condensed 2x2





He will hit the corner route.




Play 18 - WR Screen

Formation: Bunch right to 2X2 with a tight end and wing right.



The screen comes off a play action fake to the right by the QB








Play 19 - Inside Zone

Formation: Twins Right - FB Strong








Play 20 - Double Pass

Formation: Quads Left





The pass is just a little too high.




Now we are starting to see a lot more formation variation out of Borges, utilizing some four wide receiver sets as well.
